John Tate

BANQUET & EVENTS CHEF

Local chef John Tate started his fine dining career as a banquet cook at The Umstead Hotel in Cary. He spent fifteen years training under chef Jim Anile, first at the Siena Hotel’s Il Paleo Restaurant in Chapel Hill, then at Revolution Restaurant and L’Uva Enoteca in Durham. Kara Millard

CAKE DESIGNER

Kara’s Dad started teaching her to cook pancakes when she was two, sparking a long love affair with all things bread, chocolate, and pastry. She graduated from Johnson and Wales with a Bachelor’s in Baking and Pastry Arts in 2021 and has worked at Fearrington since. Unlike many cake designers, she started in cake first, and then discovered a love of art second; paint is her favorite art medium. Kara thinks of cakes as delicious art pieces.

"We honestly can’t thank you enough for everything you did to make our wedding day absolutely perfect — it will forever be one of the happiest days of our lives.. If we had to redo our wedding 10 million times, it would be exactly the same — every single detail was flawless!

We are so grateful for your dedication, passion, and talent. You not only brought our deam wedding to life, but made us feel supported, understood, and celebrated every step of the way.

"Fearrington takes care of just about everything which makes the planning process so much easier - from cake to food and drink.

My guests raved that it was the best reception food they've had by a long shot. Fearrington really made my fairytale wedding come true and they were lovely to work with the entire way. I'll be making trips back for years to come, it is such a special place!

"The thing that struck me most were the gorgeous gardens. To me they felt like the perfect combination of wonderfully wild and natural, but tamed and refined.

Gilda made us feel extremely well taken care of and we knew that they would work with us to make the day special. And last, but certainly not least, I have a bit of an obsession with cows so it felt like fate when I found out about the Fearrington belties.

"I had visited Fearrington on a number of times for sorority formals and work Christmas parties, and knew of the delicious food, superb service, and elegant setting that Fearrington offered.

I called Gilda on a Wednesday and made plans for Matthew, my parents, and me to meet with her on Sunday. Gilda made it very easy to envision our wedding and ensured us that everything would go flawlessly – this is a promise that Gilda and her whole team kept.

"Aside from being an absolutely gorgeous and comfortable-but-still-classy venue, we knew we needed a place that offered a wonderful on-site team who could manage the unique demands of our day.

Gilda wonderfully managed the day-of craziness. Getting married at Fearrington allowed us to be fully present on our day, which is such a profound gift.

Gilda thinks of everything and seems to be in multiple places all at the same time.  The food was amazing and every staff member was incredibly helpful and professional.
